Regulating of pensions a priority, says lawyer

Lawyer Nancy Chien believes there is opportunity to offer Jersey pension arrangements internationally, but says that to date, the Island has been ‘more of a follower than a leader’, with Guernsey setting more of a pace.

‘A lot of our members feel the same way,’ she said, explaining that QROPS (Qualifying Overseas Recognised Pension Schemes) had been available to non-Jersey residents since January 2015, following the States’ review of the Income Tax Law covering pension schemes. ‘Now we are starting to see a bit more interest,’ she said.

The association held its inaugural conference last week, attended by up to 120 delegates and featuring speakers from the public and private sector, including Social Security Minister Susie Pinel announcing an Islandwide consultation on States pension benefits.
