Businesses warned of online ‘social engineering’ attacks

Common types of attacks include ‘phishing’ emails, which involve a fraudster posing as a legitimate source and asking for sensitive information, and ‘vishing’, an unsolicited call from fraudsters claiming to be a bank, credit card provider or the police, asking for confidential information.

Speaking at the recent Barclays Business Club event, Bob Russell, hi-tech crime supervisor for the States police, said that anyone can be a victim of cyber crime and that ‘the best way to protect yourself is to be aware of unsolicited emails and not to open any emails from an unknown source’.

Barclays is offering a Digital Driving License, with information and interactive modules on technology, as well as the Digital Eagles initiative to educate about the risks of cyber attacks.
